Description

American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification

Advanced Swimmer - must be able to swim multiple lengths of the pool without assistance.

Participants must pass the following swim test in order to take the Lifeguard Training program. The swim test consists of being able to:

  1. Swim 150 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both (swimming on the back or side is not permitted). Swim goggles are allowed.
  2. Maintain position at the surface of the water for 2 minutes by treading water using only the legs. Swim 50 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both.
  3. Swim 20 yards, retrieve a 10lb brick and swim it back to the starting point in one minute and forty seconds.

Requirements

The online portion of the course includes 16 modules and takes approximately 6 hours to complete. Each module is designed to take 15–30 minutes, though individual times may vary. Please do not wait until the last minute. For the best experience, online work is best done on a computer, not on a phone. You will receive an email after registration with a course link.

Day 1: Saturday

  • Time: 8am–5pm
  • Location: Greenbrier Family YMCA (1033 Greenbrier Pkwy, Chesapeake VA 23320)

Day 2: Sunday

  • Morning Session: 8am–1pm
    • Location: YMCA of South Hampton Roads Home Office (920 Coporate Lane, Chesapeake VA 23320)
  • Afternoon Session: 2pm–5pm
    • Location: Greenbrier Family YMCA (1033 Greenbrier Pkway, Chesapeake VA 23320)

Day 3: Following Saturday

  • Time: 8am–5pm
  • Location: Greenbrier Family YMCA (1033 Greenbrier Pkwy, Chesapeake VA 23320)

What to bring:

  • Screenshot of blended course completion
  • Bathing suit and goggles
  • Towel and a change of warm clothing
  • Food (1 hour lunch break each day)
